SMUG mentorship with a dedicated clinical supervisor and clinical supervision
We have developed this exciting new programme to provide a learning pathway to gain a basic clinical competency qualification in MSK Ultrasound.
The programme is structured to work as a stand-alone clinical competency pathway or to complement an existing pathway by providing the clinical supervision component.
This unique Mentorship Programme gives delegates the opportunity to secure clinical supervision, with a dedicated clinical mentor, to gain clinical competency in MSK Ultrasound. Delegates will have regular supervision over an 8-month period. This has been introduced to address the lack of clinical supervisors in the UK. It also provides a unique opportunity for clinicians enrolled on PG Certificates, Diplomas and Masters to gain regular clinical supervision and support their course requisites in terms of supervised and unsupervised scans. Each delegate will be allocated one of our expert tutors to guide him or her through the Mentorship Programme.
Delegates will attend a SMUG 2-day Introduction course and then attend one day each month for 6 months. Each supervision day will focus on a specific joint (see overview below). At the end of the course (month 8) there is a one-hour practical clinical competency exam, a session to review log books/clinical portfolio and sign off all relevant paperwork.
All delegates will keep a log book/practice portfolio and will need to achieve 250 scans (100 supervised and 150 unsupervised) over the 8-month period. The tutors will sign off supervised and unsupervised scans and will provide feedback on image quality, scan findings, diagnosis and management.
The tutors have extensive experience of guiding students through their post graduate qualifications in MSK Ultrasound and are passionate about maintaining high standards of scanning and helping clinicians achieve their goal.
Any scans carried out on the day will form part of the assessment process and will be signed off by the tutor.
